December 2023 – Andres Aguilera

1. Tell us about yourself:

I come from a family of five; I am the middle child, and I definitely have middle child syndrome. My two brothers, my parents, and I migrated from Michoacán, Mexico, at the age of 10 and grew up here in Ventura County. I attended CSUCI, where I graduated in 2014 with my degree in biology. Currently, I live with my partner of four years, his two kids, and our four dogs. Two of my favorite food combinations are beer and pizza, also red wine (Syrah) and dark chocolate. My favorite ice cream flavor is strawberry, and I’m currently obsessed with pistachio butter.

2. What do you do for a job?

I work for Ventura County Medical Center (VCMC) as a sterile processing technician. My department and I are in charge of all instruments and equipment used in surgery. We make sure everything is washed, assembled, packaged, and sterilized properly for the next surgery.

3. Tell us something people might not know about you:

I love electronic music; I am a raver at heart. You will always find me listening to Techno and Afro house, and I occasionally attend music festivals when life permits. Catch me on the dance floor grooving and moving.

4. What brought you to CrossFit in the first place?

I needed a change and a challenge from the regular gym. Going to the gym was no longer motivating for me. That’s when I found CrossFit and Googled the one closest to me.

5. What was your first impression? How has that changed?

At first glance, it was very intimidating. It took me a few drives before I built up the courage to park, get out of my car, and walk in. Kai helped me sign up on the spot; it was now or never. Ever since, I realized how nice and friendly everyone is. It’s definitely a community, and I love that. The people are what make me come every day. I look forward to seeing everyone, chatting, and cheering each other on.

6. What was your first “bright spot”?

Definitely when I squatted my weight at 175 lbs. I had never power-lifted that much. Now, I squat more, and this is the strongest I’ve ever been and felt.

7. What are you working on now?

I need to work on my cardio. I’m not a big fan of running like most of the 5:30 AM crew, so I am pushing myself to work on that and learning to take a rest day without feeling guilty!

8. What’s your favorite Beachside CrossFit memory?

One of my favorite memories has to be a workout that involved running and power snatches. I remember not wanting to be there; I was not feeling it, not motivated. But after the first round, I don’t know what happened. Something got into me, and I pushed full force. I remember doing the RX on the weight and finishing at a better time than I expected. I left feeling so good about my self and how well I kicked butt. That’s when I learned the power of a good workout and how incredible my body truly is.
