ATHLETE OF THE MONTH

May 2024 – Richard Caldwell

1. Tell us about yourself:
I was born in San Jose, CA and raised in a small town in the
Central Valley called Salida, CA. Grew up playing in orchards,
rivers, lakes, water skiing, riding dirt bikes, camping, wrestling and
playing football. I moved to Ventura in 2017 and still currently live
in Ventura with my wife and my soon to be 5 year old son.

2. What do you do for a job?
I am a teacher. I teach students who have been expelled and I love
it.

3. Tell us something people might not know about you:
I have a Doctorate degree in Educational Leadership from CSU
Stanislaus. Besides that I coached high school wrestling for 10
years and even had the chance to coach the state finals match in
California twice.

4. What brought you to CrossFit in the first place?
I kept researching Crossfit and Beachside in particular and two
years ago my wife surprised me with a membership to Beachside
CrossFit for my birthday.

5. What was your first impression? How has that changed?
I was scared to start cause I was afraid to not be “good” at CrossFit.
Lifelong functional fitness is really the goal and that was a shift to
see the big picture. Plus I found out how valuable good coaching is
as our coaches are experts and also walk the walk. Lastly, I
underestimated the power of a great community. I go to the 5:30
AM class and we all push and support one another. My only regret
is that I wish I would have started a long time ago and not worried
about being “good”.

6. What was your first bright spot?
So many so hard to pick but a few months after I first started I got
my first bar muscle up during open gym. I will never forget that
cause only me and Coach Milton were in the gym and I was so
excited I had to run over and see if she saw it.

7. What are you working on now?
Getting better at double unders, Olympic lifts and overall mobility.

8. What is your favorite BeachSide CrossFit memory?
So far it has to be making the quarterfinals but I have many great
memories already at BeachSide.
