August 2025 – Kayla DeHerrera

Tell us about yourself:
Originally I’m from La Verne, CA and up until 2022, I spent time between there and Los Angeles. In October 2022, my fiancé Henry and I moved to Ventura with our cat Blueberry. Since then, we’ve gotten engaged and added our kitten Ralphie to the family. When I’m not at the gym, you can find me vintage shopping, surfing, or riding my bike to Buddy’s Wine!

What do you do for a job?
I work as an EMT for AMR in Santa Barbara County and as a Fire Cadet for Ventura City Fire Department.

Tell us something people might not know about you:
I’ve seen The Lord of the Rings movies at least 30 times (Extended editions only!).

What brought you to CrossFit in the first place?
In high school, I was on the volleyball, water polo, swim, and track and field teams. I continued my water polo career in college, but after I graduated, I didn’t know how to work out without someone telling me what to do! I needed a space where I can be coached and that was as engaging as playing a sport.

What was your first impression? How has that changed?
I was really intimated when I first started CrossFit. I had my favorite corner in the back of the room that I felt like I could hide away in. I was so concerned with failing or looking silly, but I’ve found it very rewarding to put myself out there now. There’s been so many weights or movements I wouldn’t have even attempted if it wasn’t for someone else seeing my potential that day and pushing me to try! Now I look forward to working out with everyone and making deals with Derrick about how I’ll do x amount of weight if he does it too.

What was your first “Bright Spot?”
I think my first bright spot was hitting body weight on my back squat. It was a goal that I achieved far quicker than I ever imagined and allowed me to realize I didn’t have an upper limit that I had to adhere to.

What are you working on now?
All things pull ups! Stringing multiple reps together, different variations, etc.

What’s your favorite BeachSide CrossFit memory?
My favorite memory is breaking 300 on my deadlift. Izzy and I stopped trying to calculate how much weight was on the bar and just get after it! I didn’t know how much weight I had done until the clock ran out, and it was really fun to compete and push each other without the pressure of trying to reach a specific goal.
