ATHLETE OF THE MONTH

April 2020 – Mykal Tanner

Tell us about yourself:
Hello, my name is Mykal Tanner and I am 29 years old. I have a six year old son named Jaxon who lives in Arizona and he looks exactly like me. I was born and raised in Corona, California. Growing up I always played sports, I “lettered” in football in 2008 and my team actually went to the state championship. I am currently active duty Air Force and I have been in for 11 years. I plan on serving for over 30 years.

What do you do for a job?
I am a vehicle maintenance instructor for the Air Force. I have instructed over 400 Air Force and Navy members now stationed all over the world.

Tell us something people might not know about you:
Growing up I wanted to be a professional motocross racer and I want to transition from an enlisted member to an officer.

What brought you to CrossFit in the first place?
CrossFit is special because everyone rallies together and pumps everyone up. What brought me to Beachside was the people and the coaches. I tried another gym when I was first stationed here and the coach was rude and the people did not try pumping anyone up. My first day at Beachside I felt at home because everyone is always super happy and everyone pumps each other up.

What was your first impression? How has that changed?
My first workout was the “12 days of Christmas” on my last deployment. The coach did not go into details about the workout so I was completely lost and confused. After researching and actually learning, I enjoyed it so much that I want to become L1 certified. I went from completely lost to completely passionate.

What was your first “bright spot”?
My first “bright spot” at Beachside was completing a rope climb. I was super pumped to go all the way up and did not know how to climb down so that was a funny experience.

What are you working on now?
Things that I am working on through Beachside would be: nutrition, double-unders, rope climbs, snatches, overhead squats, box jumps, and burpees. Things that I am working on outside of Beachside is: getting promoted to Technical Sergeant, achieving my MBA with a concentration of Logistics, and getting my L1 certification. I am four months away from getting my MBA and I am trying to get my L1 in June.

What’s your favorite “Beachside Crossfit memory?
My favorite Beachside memory hands down would be the rope climb. Going from super pumped to looking down and extremely scared will be something that I will never forget.
