ATHLETE OF THE MONTH

September 2023 – Austin Araiza

1. Tell us about yourself?
My names Austin Araiza and I was born and raised in Ventura County, and currently live in Pierpont. I am married to my wife, Kara, and we have a 6 month-old baby girl named Addison. So if I seem tired recently… We are currently sleep training! So any tips and tricks let me know lol.

2. What do you do for a job?
I’m a Fire Captain at Ventura City Fire Department! Currently I’m out of Station 2 on Main St. and Seaward Ave. So if you see me at work stop by!

3. Tell us something people might not know about you?
Since buying our family home, my wife and I have been collecting Plumerias! Right now we have about 8 different plants with various colors! So If anyone has any cuttings feel free to send them my way.

4. What brought you to crossfit in the first place?
After several injuries working out on my own, I figured I needed some professional help. So I came into the gym with some coworkers and I never stopped. So if you remember Brian Mulvehill, he gets a thumbs down for participation.

5. What was your first impression? How has that changed?
My first impression was the coaches were super knowledgeable and professional. And once I learned the culture at this gym, I knew I wanted to workout here. Pretty much hasn’t changed, except now I know the coaches enough so they call me out for public shame lol.

6. What was your first bright spot?
There is way to many to count! But recently I started to be able to cycle bar muscle ups! Its really one of my favorite things to see in a workout… Hopefully I will have another bright spot and be magically good at the assault bike… but I won’t hold my breath.

7. What are you working on now?
Now I am working on ring muscle ups! Eventually I want to work my way up to cycle them but for now I will just work on good form.

8. What’s your favorite beachside crossfit memory?
I would have to say I have quite a few good memories from the gym and they always revolve around a special workout… Like Friday night lights or the annual Big Nate workout at the beach. These workouts are always good and usually lead to some morning or night beverages after!
