ATHLETE OF THE MONTH

September 2020 – Sarah Webb-Schroeder

Sarah has been a member at BeachSide since March of 2019 and always comes with smile and good vibes. You can find her in the evening classes 🙂

Tell us about yourself:

I am 28, born and raised in San Diego, CA. I moved to the East Coast for undergrad outside of Philly and came back to Southern California for grad school. I’ve lived in Ventura County for almost 3 years now and Carl and I will celebrate our 2 year wedding anniversary in late October

What do you do for a job?
I am a physical therapist at Ventura Post Acute. I work with the short term rehab patients to help improve function and mobility after all types of medical events. I commonly work with patients following stroke, traumatic brain injury, orthopedic surgery (hips, knees, backs, etc), and falls. I love my job and I am so grateful for BeachSide CrossFit and functional fitness; it truly keeps me doing my job safely and without injury.

Tell us something people might not know about you:
I was a two sport collegiate athlete back in the day. I played both field hockey and golf for my undergrad university. I’ll hit the driving range every once in a while, but please don’t ask me to play a round.. My golf game is garbage now haha

What brought you to CrossFit in the first place?
Carl is essentially who introduced me to CrossFit. He was at a gym in Huntington Beach when we first started dating and while I knew about it generally it wasn’t until then that I actually considered it for myself. I moved to Washington state for 3 months during PT school and joined a box there to make friends and have a community while out of state for school. When I moved to Ventura County initially my work schedule didn’t permit me making it to any classes. Once I changed jobs there were no excuses and Carl really encouraged me to start at BeachSide. He knows my competitive spirit and knew I would get completely hooked.

What was your first impression? How has that changed?
My first impression was that as a former collegiate athlete it was humbling not to be good at something right off the bat. My lifting had gotten very sloppy since college days and my endurance was minimal. My present day impression has changed in that it is incredibly satisfying to hit a heavy lift or improve a gymnastic technique and feel “good” at what we are working on, but truthfully CrossFit is still humbling every time I walk into the gym even if its a great workout.

What was your first “bright spot”?
My consistency at the gym improved notably in late 2019, so I would say generally that my bright spot has been being able to complete more workouts at Rx. There are still some movements or weights which are outside of my current capacity, but the consistency is paying off.

What are you working on now?

My competitive nature loves to add more weight on the bar, but right now I’d really like to increase my gymnastic capabilities. I’m working to improve my handstands and would love to get that elusive first bar muscle up before the end of the year.

What’s your favorite “Beachside Crossfit memory?”
I really love any time with our BeachSide community both in and out of the gym, but so far my favorite memory has been completing the “Big Nate” Beach Hero WOD in October 2019. BeachSide’s community and camaraderie is unparalleled.
