ATHLETE OF THE MONTH

September 2019 – George Wilhelm

George is quickly approaching 1 year here at BeachSide but has already made a huge impact. A 12pm class staple, now only is George a Fitness Protege beast and a huge inspiration for making a fitness a priority in retirement! Also encouraging and supportive of all and all of our events. He just participation our row raiser where he may or may not have gone our a littttttle to fast on the first 1k 😉 To many more years of fitness George! You rock!
p.s. No ACL (from years of Soccer – not CrossFit) – still does CrossFit daily and has better knee stability because of it!

Tell us about yourself:
I’m 67 years old/young. Always played sports, mostly soccer. Love the outdoors – skiing, snowboarding, fishing, hiking, travel etc. Favorite place to get away would be anywhere in the Eastern Sierra.

What do you do for a job?
Retired. Worked 39 years as a photographer and photo editor. 31 years at the Los Angeles Times. Did a lot of sports events… Baseball, football, basketball, hockey, soccer, Olympics and everything in between.

Tell us something people might not know about you:
I have no ACL in my right knee. Basically disintegrated from years of minor injuries playing soccer. Doc says my body compensates with stronger muscles around my knee… who knew?

What brought you to CrossFit in the first place?
Funny… first time I heard the word “CrossFit” was when a soccer teammate told us about his daughter taking third place in some kind of wacky competition at a ranch up north. Think it was 2008 or 2009… Her name was Rebecca Voigt… Some years later, my daughter, Karly, had me tag along (mostly to take pictures) at a Barbells For Boobs competition she was doing. First time I ever actually saw a CrossFit workout. Was so proud of her and amazed at her strength and determination. She invited me to give it a try, found a box near where I lived and the rest is history.

What was your first impression? How has that changed?
Totally intimidated. It changed because of the CrossFit community, always accepting and encouraging.

What was your first “bright spot”?
First chest to bar pull-up

What are you working on now?
Patience. Technique and staying within myself. Just started to be able to cycle toes-to bar so I want to be able to build on that.

What’s your favorite Beachside Crossfit memory?
Every day is a new memory. Can’t pick just one right now. I’m always thankful for the great coaching and the community… I think I’m addicted.
