ATHLETE OF THE MONTH

May 2025 – Drew Jacobson

Tell us about yourself:
I grew up in Florida, spent some time living in Colorado, and have been in California for more than two decades. I’ve been married for 22 years, and we have two amazing kids—a 13-year-old son and a 9-year-old daughter. In our free time, you’ll usually find us at the beach surfing or up in the mountains snowboarding.

What do you do for a job?
I am the Head of Procurement for a tech company in the aviation industry, where I lead global strategic sourcing, contract negotiation, and vendor management for all goods and services. In addition, I run a consulting business and previously partnered with CrossFit HQ to help create and launch their merchandise program.

Tell us something people might not know about you:
I graduated from the University of Colorado at Boulder, where one of my majors was Dance. That’s actually how I met my wife—we were both part of the Dance department, and just a few months after graduating, we got married.

What brought you to CrossFit in the first place?
I was drawn to CrossFit because I wanted to challenge myself and get in better shape—something much more dynamic than a traditional gym and that would hold me accountable to putting in the work. After mentioning my interest to my wife, she and our kids surprised me with a membership to BCSF for Father’s Day 2023.

What was your first impression? How has that changed?
I was nervous at first, thinking I was in decent shape, but the foundation classes quickly humbled me and made me question whether I would be successful in CrossFit. Once I started group classes, I realized I could scale workouts to my level and gradually work toward RX when I was ready.

What was your first “bright spot” ?
When Coach Jess told me to grab a heavier dumbbell and go for the RX workout for the first time, her belief in me gave me a huge boost of confidence and fueled me to push myself further.

What are you working on now?
Trying to be able to consistently do Double Unders and Muscle-ups.

What’s your favorite BeachSide Crossfit memory?
I have two favorite memories. The first was my first Friday Night Lights during the 2024 Open—seeing everyone cheer each other on and feeling the incredible community we have at BCSF completely cemented my love for this place. My other favorite memory happened during a workout when Coach Kai asked what I was doing. Proudly, I said, ‘Chest-to-bar pull-ups!’ She tried her best not to laugh and said, ‘Oh…you’re NOT!’ From that moment on, I made sure to work on doing proper chest-to-bar pull-ups. Thanks, Coach, for pushing me to get better! 😉
