1. Tell us about yourself:
Hi! For those I haven’t met, my name is Sarah. I’m a 4:30 regular, I’ve been at BSCF for almost 2 years and I’ve been doing Crossfit for about 4.5 years. I am originally from Reno, Nevada but moved out here 2 years ago and couldn’t be happier! Ventura is such a great place to live and the BSCF community has helped to make it feel like a new home here.
2. What do you do for a job?
I am in school, getting my Master’s in nutrition. Along with that I work as a nutrition assistant for a state agency serving the elderly community. I am in the nutrition department, so I help homebound seniors overcome food insecurity. In August I will be starting my dietetic internship to wrap up my Master’s program.
3. Tell us something people might not know about you:
Something people often don’t know about me is that I had (technically have, but it is in remission) an autoimmune disease called dermatomyositis that ate away at my muscles. I had such little muscle mass that I couldn’t do many daily activities such as brushing my hair or walking for more than 5 minutes. Being able to do things like snatch my bodyweight or do burpees is something I don’t take for granted.
4. What brought you to CrossFit in the first place?
My dad and older sister brought me to CrossFit initially. They had joined a gym back in Reno and wanted to share the experience with me because they knew I would love it. It was great getting to workout with my dad, he can do more muscle ups than any other 60 year old I know, and honestly, more than I can do too. It was also great bonding time with my older sister. Gotta love that good ol family fun!
5. What was your first impression? How has that changed?
I actually went into my first CrossFit class with zero idea what to expect, I hadn’t really heard of CrossFit until I was in the gym. My first workout I ever did had a lot of wallballs, so from the start I knew it was going to be a wild time. I’ve continuously learned how challenging this sport can be as well as how rewarding and beneficial it is.
6. What was your first “bright spot”?
My very first bright spot was when I got butterfly pull ups – a movement I love so much now. Another great bright spot was snatching over 100#. I love that there is always a new skill to focus on.
7. What are you working on now?
I am perpetually working on my relationship with the bike. I am also really enjoying the strength cycles we have been doing, I love focusing on strict movements. Overall, I’m just trying to get stronger with better technique.
8. What’s your favorite BeachSide CrossFit memory?
I don’t really have one specific BeachSide memory, I really just enjoy hanging out with everyone everyday! I enjoy the social aspect of CrossFit and that I have friends who will push me everyday. I love that we are all there to challenge ourselves and make it fun!
