Going on 3 years with BeachSide June been one of the most consistent and main figures in the community, always supportive and positive to everyone around. With a new pregnancy still showing up as often as before. Read on to learn more about June!
Tell us about yourself:
I’m 29 years old. I married to Darren “fuego” Finklea last year in June, and now we have a baby boy on the way making his debut March 2020. I have been an athlete most of my life. I played competitive soccer all the way through college until I tore my left ACL/meniscus and decided to focus on my career after that.
What do you do for a job?
I’m a registered nurse for ventura county medical center. I work in the emergency/trauma department.
Tell us something people might not know about you:
My name really isn’t June, it’s Eunice. But I hate my first name so please never call me that. Lol
What brought you to CrossFit in the first place?
I used to have a personal trainer at LA FITNESS back in 2011 who helped me recover after my ACL surgery. However, working out wasn’t fun, and I really wanted to try something that challenged me more, and something I could have fun with so I joined CrossFit in 2012. Once I started nursing school I stopped CrossFit for two years, and finally joined beachside in 2017 once I got my first RN position. I’ve never looked back.
What was your first impression? How has that changed?
My first impression was that I loved the music at Beachside (thanks Nate) No other gym I had been to played good hip-hop music. Also, I’ve been a member of a few CF gyms, and BSCF vibes were just different. Everyone I met was awesome, and I TRUSTED all of the coaches to guide me in the right direction. Nothing has changed, I still believe we have some of the best coaching around, and still firmly believe we have one of the best CF communities in the county.
What was your first “bright spot”?
My first muscle up last year. I cried like a baby because I was so happy.
What are you working on now?
I’m working on having a healthy pregnancy. I’m still coming to the gym 3-4x a week, but I’ve learned to put my ego aside and come in to move and get the blood flowing, instead of trying to PR my workouts. I’ve gotten so much support from the BSCF community and coaches and I’m very grateful for all of you guys.
What is your favourite memory at Beachside Crossfit?
My favorite memory at beachside was my very first beachside beatdown that I did with Jordan! I PRD my clean and jerk, and it was the start of a great year for me.
