ATHLETE OF THE MONTH

April 2019 – Carl Shroeder

Carl is always willing to help and has a great positive attitude.  He has been apart of this community since July of 2019 and just this month his wife Sarah has joined us! During the CrossFit Open Carl came in and took amazing photos for everyone to share freely and that is a big deal that takes alot of time, so be sure to thank him when you see him!

P.S. He has a sneaky Dodgeball game- watch out!

Tell us about yourself
Hello! I’m 26 and recently married to a beautiful, wonderful, incredible woman who is starting to come to the gym! Be careful, because she’ll be kicking our butts really soon. I am a So Cal native, but went to college deep in the South. Roll Tide! I headed back to the West Coast to pursue my doctorate in clinical psychology at CLU (gonna be working on that for a while).

What do you do for a job?
While pursuing my doctorate in psychology, I’m currently seeing clients as a therapist trainee through CLU’s Community Counseling Center. Soon, I will begin seeing clients at a prominent Malibu substance abuse treatment center to continue my training.

Tell us something people might now know about you.
I was originally working towards a classical oboe performance degree before switching to psychology. I also played saxophone in the marching at the University of Alabama (Million Dollar Band), and was able to travel all over the country supporting the Crimson Tide!

What brought you to CrossFit in the first place?
I am a huge fan of community, especially in regard to exercise. I strongly believe that working out with others makes for a better and more enjoyable workout. I also consider myself a “lazy workout-er,” and know I will get a good workout at a CrossFit gym if I just walk through the door.

What was your first impression? How has that changed?
My first impression was jaded because the workout was 1-mile run, then 25 light kb swings, then another 1-mile run. I had no problem with this, and the gym told me to come back the next day for something different. THAT was a workout I had never done. I now love the feeling of finishing a workout I never thought would go well, and love the support of the others at the gym.

What was your first “bright spot?”
I can’t remember my first “bright spot,” but my most recent bright spot was getting bar muscle-ups during the open. There’s something in the water during the open workouts where it seems like a first is bound to happen!

What are you working on now?
Right now, I’m really trying to work on consistency and eating better! Naps and Chick-fil-a are my biggest weaknesses. Inside the gym, I’m working on overhead mobility!

What’s your favorite “Beachside CrossFit” memory?
I have 2 that really standout: dodgeball tournament and taking photos for the open! At the dodgeball tournament, I loved the community, fun, and competitiveness of all that! I always appreciate “Rise Volleyball Club” for opening up their courts for us! Photography is a hobby of mine, and I appreciate Beachside and its members sharing photos, seeing the encouragement through a camera lens, and the joy people experience after a successful workout
