September 2026 – Brian Barker

Tell us about yourself:

I’m a 66-year-old living a full-bore life in Ventura with my beautiful wife Christine. I’m super passionate about my work, and I also play keyboards in local cover bands most weekends. Otherwise, I love traveling, biking, boating, fishing and scuba diving.

What do you do for a job?
I’m an aerospace engineer and currently CEO for Hummingbird Aero, a company I founded about 10 years ago that develops aircraft flight control systems.

Tell us something people might not know about you:
I have a master’s degree in piano performance.

What brought you to CrossFit in the first place?
I was looking for a better fitness routine to address some concerning cardiovascular problems – my boating buddy David Morris recommended I check out BSCF and after one discussion with Nate I signed up. Best thing I ever did!

What was your first impression? How has that changed?
I noticed almost immediately the commitment and camaraderie of the BSCF members were amazing – motivated people who cared about the quality of the health and well-being. The bonds formed from the common experience of pushing your limits seem special, and I just love my friends at BSCF!

What was your first “Bright Spot?”
The personal care and coaching I received at BSCF meant a great deal to me – I’m not exactly the youngest person at the gym. The help I get from Kai, Jess, Kallan and Nate in navigating my crossfit journey makes everything possible, and by far the “brightest spot” in my experience there.

What are you working on now?
PULL-UPS ALWAYS! But otherwise, I work on overall sustainability – I want to be there every day possible – I’m learning how to address the aches and pains and not let them limit my attendance. I don’t have to be Superman – just super smart!

What’s your favorite BeachSide CrossFit memory?
When I finally climbed a rope to the ceiling of the gym, I felt like a new person!
