Michael Gonzales aka “Big Mike” has been part of the BeachSide Family since January 2021. He’s always brought his positive attitude and been very coachable since he started. Michael is very encouraging to all athletes in the fact that he works hard and is always looking to improve his movements and skills. You can typically find him working out with his fellow bros in the 4:30p classes and most Saturday mornings. Congratulations Mike!
Tell us about yourself:
Hey everyone, my name is Michael Gonzales and I was born and raised in good ‘ol Santa Paula, and I’m lucky enough to still call it home. I love my little town and try to be involved in my community as much as I can including being a part of a few local organizations. I have two dogs, my old boy Rocko (yes, I named him after the wallaby), and my devil dog, Barley. I love being active as much as I love being a homebody. Aside from CrossFit, I enjoy hiking, biking, and am typically in a rec softball league. I love true crime and comedy podcasts, drinking copious amounts of coffee, camping, craft beer, and all things spooky.
What do you do for a job?
I’m in marketing for an agriculture company. I’ve been here for just over 12 years now and absolutely love it. I feel so lucky to have found a job that allows me to use my background in business and incorporate my passion for creativity.
Tell us something about yourself people might not know:
I have a random collection of over 170 growlers from all of the different craft breweries I’ve been to. Also, my high school graduating class consisted of a whopping 14 people!
What brought you to CrossFit in the first place?
Two of my best friends that I grew up with were the first to push me to give CrossFit a try. In all honesty, I was really skeptical of CrossFit at first but I’m glad I finally gave it a shot. After that first day I was hooked because I knew that this was a sport that would continue to push my limits while improving my strength and fitness.
What was your first impression? How has that changed?
My first impression of BeachSide was, “These people are rad, I need to join this gym.” But for real, when I first walked in I sensed that this was a solid group of people and a community that I definitely wanted to be a part of.
What was your first “bright spot”?
My first bright spot would have to be the moment I first realized that I was actually starting to do workouts Rx.
What are you working on now?
I’m currently working on mechanics and technique, especially when it comes to cleans. I know I am capable of so much more if I focus on dialing in my technique. Also, It would be nice to finally get my bar muscle ups down.
What’s your favorite BeachSide CrossFit memory?
Hmmm, great question. There have been so many great moments and memories at Beachside in my time here. I think that speaks to how incredible this community is! But I will say that this past Open/Friday Night Lights was so much fun.
