ATHLETE OF THE MONTH

August 2019 – Aaron Luoma

Aaron is a phenomenal athlete and a great friend to have at the gym. He always shows up to class ready to go with a positive attitude no matter what the workout is! Aaron always says he trusts the process and believes in CrossFit.

Tell us about yourself:
I grew up in Ventura on The Avenue, we moved up to Northern California my sophomore year. I was able to move back here about 3 years ago. Started CrossFit 8 years ago but had several severe injuries during that time (from rugby, not CrossFit) that I had long recoveries from but each time I picked up again almost from the beginning.

What do you do for a job?
I’m an assistant principal at Oxnard High School, which, if you knew me in high school, you’d definitely appreciate the irony in that.

What brought you to CrossFit in the first place?
I started CrossFit because every other weightlifting routine I tried didn’t work.

What was your first impression? How has that changed?
My first impression was CrossFit is awesome and I wish I’d discovered it 20 or even 10 years ago. I was 42 when I started CrossFit. CrossFit hasn’t let me down, I think it’s by far the best fitness program and it’s combined with a great sense of community. Especially here at Beachside.

What was your first “bright spot”?
I’d have to say the first time completing The Murph was a huge bright spot. Before CrossFit I’d never imagined being able to do something like that.

What are you working on now?
I’m working on everything right now. I had two knee surgeries a couple years ago and I’m building back from those. I was told I may never run or be able to lift again so every day in the box is a win.

What’s your favorite “BeachSide CrossFit memory?
I really liked the way Beachside did The Open this year, that was so much fun! Also being on the winning team might have had something to do with that (Ginger’s Have Souls #1!)
