ATHLETE OF THE MONTH

May 2019 – Ben Herrera

Ben has been with us since June 2018! He has made his health a priority and shows up for class even with a challenging schedule, no excuses. His hard work, dedication and discipline has paid off both in and of the gym. Not only is he leaner, stronger and healthier for it, it’s even rubbed off on his family and regularly comes to enjoy CrossFit with his 14 year old daughter who is crushing it in our CrossFit Teens class! Keep up the good work, Herreras! We’re stoked to have you part of our BeachSide CrossFit ‘ohana!

Tell us about yourself:
My name is Ben Herrera. I was born and raised in Oxnard, CA in 1982. I started plumbing at the age of 22. Plumbing soon became a passion of mine. After completing my apprenticeship I got my contractors license and opened up a plumbing company in Ventura called Ben’s Plumbing.

Tell us something people might not know about you:
I’ve been playing in an adult basketball league with my best friends from high school for the past three years.

What brought you to CrossFit in the first place?
When I met Nathan [the owner]. I was working on a repair at his home. One thing led to another, next thing you know, I was doing burpees.

What was your first impression?
How important technique is. I was also very impressed with how knowledgeable the coaches were.

What was your first “bright spot”?
When I was able to complete a 35lb. overhead squat.

What are you working on now?
Double unders.

What’s your favorite BeachSide CrossFit memory?
When we went hiking near Mugu Naval Base up to the flagpole. I had never been hiking before and was not sure what to expect. During the hike I was able to have conversations with other BeachSide members and get to know them. Once we got to the flagpole we took a group picture and admired the view of the ocean.
