It’s that time of year again the “Open” has arrived in all its glory. And with all that glory bombarding your ears and eyes from left to right, Chances are on a daily basis. Join now! Did you join! Sign up! Have you signed up? Who has signed up? And chances are one might be thinking “Really I suck” “Not strong enough” “I run slow” “My times are slow” “I do not have the ability to do ________”
How about these reasons? bullous emphysema (47% lung function) Left leg so trashed out, I do not have the ability to do burpees, box jumps (even though I think I have the ability to box jump coach will not let me blah blah blah), Or even squat correctly (which stops me from squatting heavy). A bum shoulder (thankfully getting better) that does not allow me to try any sort of Kipping, butterfly bar movements Now those are reasons NOT to do the Open.
ohhh snap!!!

The open is more than just a weeding out process for the regionals. Why would such a person do such thing? What would driving force behind this thought process? There are so many reasons why CF folk join the open. To many for me to go into detail in this post.
For me it comes down to a basic thought. “I have the ability to do”. I have the ability to do Deadlifts, I have the ability to do KBS,I have the ability to do pushups, I have the ability to do thrusters (well kinda they are ugly but they still count),I have the ability to do backsquats,I have the ability to do pushpress,I have the ability to do assisted pull-ups,I have the ability to do single unders,I have the ability to row, I have the ability to push a prowler.
Even though those items in the open that “I DO NOT have the ability to do” (a whole lot of the movements in my case) That is not what matters. It does not matter to those that are counting for me or pushing me along. It does not matter to those helping me get through the tough parts of the WoD. What matters to them is what “I have the ability to do”. And afterwards I am treated just like a fire breathing beast that is able to do all the movements and score a high ranking. And that shows the mindset of the CF community if you ask me. It’s never about what you could not do. It is always about what you are able to do.
With that in mind
What do you have the ability to do?
